President's Message - February 2010

Spring is coming soon! General Beau Lee, Ph.D., Georgia’s Official Weather Prognosticator made his prediction on February 2nd at 7:35am in rainy, 40 degree weather. Beau reported that he did not see his shadow, foretelling an early spring. In the spring, people often like to clean their homes. It's a great thing to do! But it's important to stay safe while you're doing it, especially from falls and poisoning – two of the top causes of home injuries. As safety professionals we are focused on workplace safety, but we need to remember to bring our work home with us and encourage home safety. I have listed Spring Cleaning Safety tips from www.homesafetycouncil.org to help you “Bring your Work Home.”

• When cleaning out closets or re-organizing things, always keep stairs, steps, landings and all floors clear.

• Carry loads you can see over, and keep one hand free to hold banisters and railings.

• Five gallon buckets are often used while cleaning and present a serious drowning danger to young children. Never leave a bucket or any standing water unattended and store buckets empty and upside-down.

• Follow safety recommendations when using harsh products, such as wearing gloves and masks. Do not mix products together because their contents could react with dangerous results.

• Never use gasoline to clean something and never use or store gasoline in your home, even in tiny quantities. Gasoline vapors can explode with just a spark. If you must keep some, use a special safety container. Store it in an outside shed.

• When you clean out your cabinets, look at the labels on the products. If you see the words “Caution,” “Warning,” “Danger,” “Poison,” or “Keep Out of Reach of Children,” be very careful. These products should be locked up when you are not using them.

• Remember to put things away so people cannot trip on them. Safely tuck away telephone and electrical cords out of walkways. In homes with children, make sure toys and other items are always safely put away when not in use.

• If you need to climb to clean something, use a stepladder or ladder. When using a ladder, stand at or below the highest safe standing level. For a stepladder, the safe standing level is the second rung from the top, and for an extension ladder, it's the fourth rung from the top. Before using, make sure the rungs are dry.

Over the past 5 years I have seen our chapter grow in membership and much of that growth is because of you. We know the Georgia Chapter of ASSE is a great organization and we continually try to provide great networking, great meeting topics and great resources. The Chapter has depended on you to spread the word and you have by introducing ES&H professional to ASSE. NOW you can be reward for it with the ASSE Member-Get-A-Member campaign . The steps are easy: 1) Forward an ASSE application to someone you know using the refer-a-friend tool. 2) Ask your friend to enter your name in the sponsor section of the membership application. 3) Tell as many people as you want. ASSE will keep track of how many paid memberships you have sponsored for the campaign, which ends in December 2010.

Check your status by sending an e-mail to ASSE's membership department. You will receive a gift when your first friend joins, as well as other gifts for additional referrals. Also, for every new paid member you recruit, you will receive an entry to win a free trip to Safety 2011 in Chicago. The trip includes a full Safety 2011 package, 3 nights’ hotel accommodations and a $250 AMEX card to use for expenses.

I hope to see you at the next General Meeting of the Georgia Chapter and as always feel free to attend our board meetings which are at 9:30am the day of the general Meeting at the same location

Thank you,

Brian P. Nulty CSP
Georgia Chapter President

Thank you to the membership of the GA Chapter for allowing me to represent you at ASSE's 2009 Leadership Conference! It was an exciting and busy 2 days filled with great learning opportunities and networking with 190 ASSE members. The conference kicked off with a tour of ASSE headquarters in Des Plaines, IL. We learned about the inner workings of the Society, our duties as an officer, and identified our personal communication style. In addition, we attended workshops on building volunteers leaders, facilitating decision making, leadership and management, and strategic thinking. I found the conference very worthwhile and hope to better serve you in the year ahead.
