Many documents are due to our ‘mother ship’ this week. Lets take a quick look at a couple of items on these documents so everyone can get some insight on why we focus on this or that item.
Yesterday at the general meeting I mentioned one the items of focus: Generating and growing a Student Chapter in Georgia.
If you look at the summary chart below you can see that while we have achieved many significant milestones in the past few years rising from tiny star to just squeaking into Chapter Stars, we have a couple of opportunities to fill in the pie.
Here is a snap shot of the report the executive committee will be submitting to national ASSE this week.

The GA chapter has 3 areas we can work on to move further into the Chapter Stars area. Standards and Practices, Chapter Leadership/Organization, and Student Support.
I just wanted to say a few things on Student support. To the best of my knowledge, Georgia does not have a university or college with a specific Safety degree program. We have had a hard time giving away our scholarship money over the years partly due to this fact. One of the goals of the executive committee is to reach out to UGA, GT, GSU and University of West GA to see if we can connect with a program of study that is closely aligned with the safety and health profession.
One of the most important responsibilities we have as safety professionals is to bring new folks into this vital profession and one of the best places to do that is on a college campus. Getting a student section going will promote the profession and make it easier for us to award our scholarship dollars to the right type of students.
There is one other item where the executive committee needs your help.
ASSE has 13 Practice Specialties. Many of us add a little extra to our membership renewals to be in one of these groups. We would like to add a link to our GA website providing access to our own GA talent. To do this we will need to know who has this expertise and wants to participate.
The national ASSE has a section where you can ‘Ask the Expert’ and we are thinking of replicating that on a chapter level. We are not necessarily trying to compete directly with that process but enhance it with local experts who understand unique GA industries and have probably had similar issues to solve.
We want to align the subjects with the ASSE current Practice Specialties. We can have multiple folks engaged with any one specialty and we believe our current website will support this added service. When a question is posted, it will be emailed to the volunteer specialists in that area for a response.
This should not only be a good source of local expertise but a good networking tool for our membership to connect with each other.
We are seeking volunteers for this function. Please contact a board member if interested.
Thanks and have a great month.
Tim Farr
2010-2011 ASSE Georgia Chapter President
Thank you to the membership of the GA Chapter for allowing me to represent you at ASSE's 2009 Leadership Conference! It was an exciting and busy 2 days filled with great learning opportunities and networking with 190 ASSE members. The conference kicked off with a tour of ASSE headquarters in Des Plaines, IL. We learned about the inner workings of the Society, our duties as an officer, and identified our personal communication style. In addition, we attended workshops on building volunteers leaders, facilitating decision making, leadership and management, and strategic thinking. I found the conference very worthwhile and hope to better serve you in the year ahead.
